Happy Friday everyone! It’s hard to believe that it has already been TWO weeks since I was in North Carolina soaking up all I could from talented photographer, Tamara Lackey. Tamara is an internationally acclaimed child and family photographer located in Durham, North Carolina who is passionate about living life to its fullest! I was first introduced to her through her videos on KelbyOne back when I was first learning how to even operate my camera and right away I was drawn to her enthusiastic shooting methods and down-to-earth personality. When I saw the post about her North Carolina workshop, I jumped at the opportunity to go learn from her in person and I am SO happy I did!
When I first started my business in the fall of 2012, I didn’t know much about the business of photography- I just knew I wanted capture beautiful images for people. Since then, my business has grown and I have added another child to the mix, which makes life a bit on the crazy side at times. Before attending Tamara’s workshop, I knew it was time to take my business to the next level but didn’t know how, especially with so much going on at home. After spending those three intense days from 9am to 6pm discussing photography basics, post-processing workflow, composition, session techniques, sales, business planning, marketing and work-life-balance (two of those hours each day were also for sessions), I can honestly say I have a plan now and am SO pumped to be able to take the next step in my business! I realized at the workshop that I had been running my business (and life) in a reactionary way as opposed to a pro-active way. Instead of me being empowered by the amount of hours I have and utilizing them to accomplish the things I could, I had allowed myself to become paralyzed for fear I wouldn’t have enough time to accomplish anything. It’s amazing how that concept applies to anything in life, really. If we allow ourselves to get overwhelmed with the big picture instead of making small, manageable goals, we will never grow or accomplish anything. I am SO excited for the things to come for Katy J. Photography (both planned and beyond what I can plan) and I am SO glad you all will be with me along the way!- KJ
